A Simple look at Ben Moore

The South-East Melbourne Phoenix have signed an import (finally) and now basketball addicts like myself can spend the next two weeks overthinking about all the ways a 6'8 Power forward can help out a hungry South-East Melbourne outfit. This signing brings lots of questions to the front of my mind, 90% of these questions are based around how this guy will fit with Mitch Creek, who is arguably the big fish for this team, but first a quick look at what Moore brings to the table. Moore projects as a solid forward option who should be able to slide up and play center, this is especially important when Mitch Creek is playing the 4 spot. What's also intriguing is Moore's potential stretching the floor, he shot 39% from three in the G-League last season but was barely taking more then one three a game, this small sample size leaves me pretty inconclusive on this aspect of his game.

Just from the stats it's pretty easy to tell this guy won't be major factor in creating shots for others as his assist/turnover ratio is below average at best. 66% true shooting to go along with a 122 offensive rating leads me to believe he's going to be an effective offensive player, obviously the move to the NBL will brings its challenges but his statistics over several different leagues and sample sizes pretty much paint the same picture, Ben Moore will be an effective and dynamic play finisher that will give South-East Melbourne an athletic boost and an excellent scorer in the low post/dunker area.

I expect on the offensive end we will se a lot of Mitch Creek drives end with Moore cutting at the basket for the easy dump off. On the defensive end I don't believe we will see any backwards step, with his length and athleticism I see no reason why he would struggle especially considering there are no more Bogut sized obstacles to maneuver around this season (That we know of anyway)

To keep this short, I believe Ben Moore will be a great addition to this team with his Offensive potential matched with his defensive tools, a smart cutter that has good recognition of when to move towards the basket, I also expect some great blocks in his NBL highlights package come the end of the season.

Disappointing beginning for two of the league's most promising teams.

Three rounds in to NBL21 and there are already a few teams licking their wounds. The Cairns Taipans and the New Zealand Breakers are two of these teams. They will be both be undergoing a prompt and rapid root-cause analysis of their individual short comings.   This will be heavily focused on getting their squads back on track. The Cairns Taipans on again/off again defence will be front and centre, for New Zealand maybe a sneaky conditioning session for Lamar Patterson is in order? Why are these two teams in particular struggling?  New Zealand Breakers Record 0-2 Ranked 9th on Offense Ranked 5th on Defence per SpatialJam Favourites, Stacked, Unstoppable... Just a few words that were used to describe the Breakers as they were on a tangent of big player signings this last off season. Oh how a few games can change things... It's going to be a tough season for the Breakers as they have been presented with a less than beneficial schedule. Essentially they've be...

My off-season thoughts on the Cairns Taipans

Last year the Cairns Taipans suprised a lot of people and laid down the blueprint for the non-powerhouse organisations pathway to success. Three imports.  It's well known to be successful in the NBL you have to hit on all your import spots. This is something that of course is easier said then done.  What made last season so outstanding was Cairns ability to be able to go out and legitimately create the identity of their team through excellent scouting and a brilliant approach to bringing these guys into the NBL, which again, not a simple feat.  However, all of this praise essentially means nothing as we move into the ever changing landscape that is 2020/21. Three imports is no longer an option, DJ Newbill isn't returning to the snake pit and Cairns don't have the same local talent as Sydney, Perth or Melbourne, and for good reason, those designations are breeding grounds for great Australian talent. What to expect from the new look Adelaide 36ers.

Young, exciting and challenging would be my best description of what I expect from this squad. A team "lead" by NBA draft hopeful Josh Giddey with a sprinkle of veteran guidance from Ex-NBA point guard Donald Sloan and EuroLeague journeyman Tony Crocker.  What an interesting team they've put together down in South Australia as we see a nice blend of talented distributers mixed in with some handy scorers and versatile offensive bigs.  Let's start by talking about this teams offensive playmaking which will be a strength this season no doubt.  Donald Sloan and Josh Giddey. If you indulge in any Adelaide 36ers content throughout this season there is a strong chance it'll be focused around these two.  Watching Giddey early on, then watching Sloan join in the other night has given me optimism that the 6ers aren't going to be the easy beats a lot of people thought they might be. These guys have NBA levels skills and IQs, hence why one had a "semi dec...
