Giddey, Froling and Sobey: My thoughts on Game 1 and what to expect from Game 2.

Friday night saw the return of live basketball and the NBL in a match where we were blessed with an abundance of young Australian talent headlined by 2021 NBA draft prospect Josh Giddey. Giddey who currently projects as an on-ball playmaking wing had an excellent start to his unofficial NBL career finishing with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists.

Giddey however wasn't the only young, up and coming Australian to impress fans and coaches as the likes of Keanu Pinder, Tyrrell Harrison and Tanner Krebs all were out putting their best foot forward as coaches start to determine what their rotations are going to look like come the start of the season.

In terms of game 1 and what to expect from game 2 there will certainly be a stronger emphasis from Brisbane on offensive execution and defensive consistency.

Brisbane throughout parts of the game looked clunky and ill-disciplined on offense often relying on Anthony Drmic to create shots for himself and others on handoffs and off screens, however it begs the question, How much can we really take from a preseason game?

It seemed evident throughout the game that the scoreboard wasn't accurately depicting who was the better team but more so who was the most prepared going into the game.

Adelaide looked good rotating on defence and succeeded in playing two bigs while not getting caught with said bigs getting to far up on guys such as Nathan Sobey, while on Offense they gave Giddey strong lanes to the rim and optimal passing angles for him to work his magic in the pick and roll game.

For Brisbane like I said it was clunky, however the Offensive philosophy and play sets from this Lemanis lead squad look promising as Harry Froling was getting up high to highlight his playmaking ability and willingness to be creative with hand offs and screens, I expect Froling will be quite aggressive to start this next game as he, Sobey and Drmic will be looking to up the effort and intensity for atleast parts of this scratch match.

Disappointing beginning for two of the league's most promising teams.

Three rounds in to NBL21 and there are already a few teams licking their wounds. The Cairns Taipans and the New Zealand Breakers are two of these teams. They will be both be undergoing a prompt and rapid root-cause analysis of their individual short comings.   This will be heavily focused on getting their squads back on track. The Cairns Taipans on again/off again defence will be front and centre, for New Zealand maybe a sneaky conditioning session for Lamar Patterson is in order? Why are these two teams in particular struggling?  New Zealand Breakers Record 0-2 Ranked 9th on Offense Ranked 5th on Defence per SpatialJam Favourites, Stacked, Unstoppable... Just a few words that were used to describe the Breakers as they were on a tangent of big player signings this last off season. Oh how a few games can change things... It's going to be a tough season for the Breakers as they have been presented with a less than beneficial schedule. Essentially they've be...

My off-season thoughts on the Cairns Taipans

Last year the Cairns Taipans suprised a lot of people and laid down the blueprint for the non-powerhouse organisations pathway to success. Three imports.  It's well known to be successful in the NBL you have to hit on all your import spots. This is something that of course is easier said then done.  What made last season so outstanding was Cairns ability to be able to go out and legitimately create the identity of their team through excellent scouting and a brilliant approach to bringing these guys into the NBL, which again, not a simple feat.  However, all of this praise essentially means nothing as we move into the ever changing landscape that is 2020/21. Three imports is no longer an option, DJ Newbill isn't returning to the snake pit and Cairns don't have the same local talent as Sydney, Perth or Melbourne, and for good reason, those designations are breeding grounds for great Australian talent. Will The Wildcats Flex Their Size?

The "Diet Wildcats" will take on the "knock-off Wildcats" in the first semi-final. Brian Goorjian's defensive unit Illawara will be tasked with the daunting job of taking down the ever consistent playoff juggernaut that is the Perth Wildcats.  Except this series will not be a regular Wildcats sort of series, one key ingredient to Perth's success won't be available, Bryce Cotton .  Plenty has been said about Bryce Cotton's absence and the ramifications that will follow for Trevor Gleesons men.  The interesting story will be where does all that usage go? The defence will undoubtedly figure itself out, Norton will go to Harvey and surely do a respectable job, the presumption being they force Harvey right and keep him away from the deadly step back jumper and even deadlier free throw line floater.  With Cotton off the court this means they can insert someone else, whether that be an offensive changeup or a defensive one.  This also means more...
